Because of the recent Zika virus outbreak people have become concerned about protecting their unborn babies. Once the child is born there's still more to know about the care and use of products to protect them safely.

Many insect repellents contain DEET at different concentration levels and you may have questions:
Is it safe to use during pregnancy?
Is it safe for breastfeeding moms?
When is it safe to first use a bug repellent on a child?

Here are some thoughts that may be obvious and maybe some not:

Cover up - Give bugs a smaller target.
Read all instructions about any product usage carefully.
Choose a repellent with a low concentration of DEET.
Do Not apply DEET over cuts, wounds, or irritated skin.
Do Not use DEET on the face area or allow children to handle a repellent.
After returning indoors wash treated areas.
